Pakkala NilabaDi

One of the best songs of Tyagaraja, coming to the raaga 'kharaharapriya', Tyagaraja was the main one who composed many compositions in this raga. t's one of the most beautiful and classic raaga handled in concerts with elaboration. The meaning for the name 'Kharakarapriya' as some people do pronounce it - which I would like to share here in this post. Kara- would make it 21st mela. Kharakarapriya is actually a 22nd melakarta raaga according to the scheme with the prefix 'khara'.Whatever the meaning is, a beautiful all-time raaga which has many popular Tyagaraja Compositions.

Translated , it will mean - Lord Rama's favourite.
khara- the rAkshasa(khara-dhUshaNa)
hara-slayer(ie. RAMA)
priyA-(his ) beloved-meaning sItA.

Song : Pakkala nilabaDi
ragam: kharaharapriya

22 kharaharapriya mEla
Aa: S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S
Av: S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S

TaLam: Misra chapu
Composer: Tyagaraja
Language: Telugu

Here goes the meaning!

What is the secret of the service by which , standing on either side, you both delight the Lord immensely? O mother Sita, how charming you are with your face rivaling the moon's in splendor, and with teeth like choice pearls in fine array! O Lakshmana! The most ardent servant of the Lord! Do you prostrate before Him or sing His praises and glory chanting the divine name or lose yourselves in meditating on Him? Do me the favor of revealing the secret so that I may follow suit and redeem myself.

  6. Rohini,

Had a look at your other blogs too, interesting and you have given a proper picture of the kritis as well.

I hold a doctorate degree in music and live in the USA. Just happen to browse and cam across you blog and its too good.

You need to upload the songs to get the effect of the kritis which are divine.

I have not met anyone who can write so well, so knowledgeable,... I mean in depth knowledge of music, I remember hearing pallavi, anupallavi, charannam and stuff like that on some reality show on TV. better and the music part was kind of going over my head.. To top it all i feel you know Sanskrit too and would have had a better experience of the Indian Classical music.

I wait to listen to your kritis on the instruments. I appreciate!

    Best of Luck!!
