OM VISHNAVE NAMAHA


'Vishnu', as the name suggests is the ultimate soul that resides in the body and soul of everything that pervades.

The story goes that a girl of 16yrs was left at home by her parents only to be told that she was not older enough to understand the lectures of Sage Garga, an ardent philosopher on Vishnu Sahasranama and was asked to take care of the pot full of butter.

Shanta could hear the knocks at the door, and found an old saint asking for a glass of water. She welcomed the saint and they exchanged talk which made her tell that her parents have gone to listen to the lectures on the second name -
'VISHNU' by sage Garga. The old man said that he would explain the meaning of Vishnu from the Sahasranama.

Within seconds when the girl came
with a glass of water in her hand, could not find the old sage, but literally saw LORD KRISHNA tasting the butter happily.

She was displeased with Krishna for cheating her. Krishna was looking naughty with his mischievous smile on his face. Shanta lost her patience and gave a blow on the boy's back. Lo! the very moment she felt the blow on her back, the butter pot broke into pieces, Sage Garga felt as if some-body had beaten him with a stick on his back. All the audience felt the same. The cows, the calves, the buffaloes, the sheep, the frogs all jumped alike in pain.

Shanta saw that the stick that beat Krishna was also feeling the pain and jumping.

Now, we understand that what the word Vishnu meant. He is the one in all...the ONE IN ALL and everything.

Hence, there should be no ill-feelings towards any soul. For the ultimate soul residing in the soul and body of everything is the pervader Vishnu.
Vaishnavism teaches Love and Bhakti by the name Vishnu.

Chanting this name "OM VISHNAVE NAMAHA', will convert even our worst critics into our fans!

OM VISWAYA NAMAHA


Sahasranama is the panacea for all diseases - spiritual, mental and physical. The importance of the first name in Vishnu Sahasranama 'Viswam', is brought forth with immense pleasure so that we all rejoice reciting this name of the Almighty alone which can do wonders for us.

Here, the story goes that once there was a Brahmin on the banks of river Narmada married to a lady named Itara. They were blessed with a son named Lytareya. The boy's father thought it would be in order to initiate him the Vishnu Sahasranama and asked him to repeat 'Viswam'. Well, after the first word the father taught the boy the second name 'Vishnuhu', but the boy was unable to pronounce the second name even after years.

The Brahmin got frustrated and married again and his second wife gave birth to two sons and they were Vedic scholars.
Lytareya was mocked by his neighbors for not uttering anything other than 'Viswam'.

Itara thought that her son was a mentally retarded and felt that he was a shame to be born in a family of learned sages, and drove him out of the house. The boy's response to this was just the word
'Viswam' alone and he left his home.

His step brothers were learned and they were chanting the Vedic hymns. All of a sudden they could not utter a word, and further negative incidents followed. The house was robbed of all the riches and jewelery. The old brahmin was stunned with this happenings and on the advise of sage Vasishta, came to know that it was the misfortune of his wife who drove Lytareya, who was a yogi by birth and knew the importance of the word, his undiluted devotion to the Lord who is full of virtues made every moment glorious for the Brahmin's family and driving him has lead to all the misfortunes.

Lytareya returned home and the Brahmin was gifted back with all his fortunes and his sons started chanting the Vedic hymns.

Sage Vyasa shows the importance of the word 'Viswam' here as ....
Viswam means the one full with all the good, mental, physical and spiritual glories by his nature. Such an attitude can only be true in the case of Lord Vasudeva. Having known the fact, one need not go into the depth to find anything more worth uttering than this name of the Lord, once you realize the Lord alone is full - the whole One in all his glory!.

Sage Veda Vyasa heard this anecdote from his great-grand father Sage Vasishta. He compiled the 1000 names of the Lord keeping the auspicious nature and this incident in his mind, he put this name 'Viswam' - the one full with all that is good - as the first one.

Those who chant 'Viswaya Namaha' will, no doubt live amidst all types of prosperity - full to the brim. Thus, it will be in order for all the followers of Bhagavan Ramanuja to adopt the form 'Viswaya Namaha' and meditate to the Lord 'the one full in all respects'.

Let us all chant this mantra 'Om Viswaya namaha'. Only one of the thousand names is enough to serve our purpose, provided we chant it simultaneously meditating upon Him with the attributes described in the name. Viswam means the whole - the one full with all that is good in all the fields. Let us chant 'Om Vishwaya Namaha' for universal prosperity.

VISHNU SAHASRANAMAM


Vishnu Sahasranama is the anecdote to ultimate liberation where the soul can be lead to Mukthi. It is the greatest gem when uttered with true devotion is a splendorous ornament to decorate the Lord. ‘Sahasra’, in Sanskrit means a thousand and ‘namah’ means name. Each name eulogizes one of His countless great attributes.

Adi Sankara Bhagavatpada emphasized in his commentaries that Naama Sankeerthana is the best way of devotion and recitation of his innumerable names.

Swami Sankaracharya wrote a definitive commentary on the Sahasranama. Additionally, Parasara Bhattar, a follower of Ramanuja has also written a commentary.

In the poem Lord Sri Vishnu is referred by 1000 names, which constitute his imminent attributes. The Lord is endless, all-knowing-omniscient, all pervasive-omnipresent, all powerful–omnipotent.

There is absolutely no single specific benefit that cannot be derived by chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama. Vaishnavites major part of the prayer consists of Sahasranama, who are the ardent followers of Vishnu. They believe the other form of God such as Shiva and Shakti aspects are manifestation of their chosen Lord Vishnu.

Shaivaites give prominence to Shiva, but Sri Rudram one of the sacred prayers describe Vishnu as an aspect of Shiva. Adi Sankara has interpreted this to mean that Vishnu and Shiva are the same and it is Vishnu that is praised by worship of Shiva.

Parasara Bhattar has interpreted the name "Shiva" and "Rudra" in vishnu sahasranama to mean a quality or attribute of Vishnu. The great Vaishnavite devotee and philosopher Sri Parasara Bhattar, who was granted the rarest of the rare privileges of conversing with Sri Ranganatha personally and directly at Srirangam, has written a scholarly and authoritative commentary on the Vishnu Sahasranama, titled 'Bhagavad Guna Darpana' meaning 'the mirror' (Darpana) that reflects the transcendental glory of the Lord.

Mankind will be free from all sorrows by chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama which has the thousand names of the one All-Pervading Eternal Supreme Being who is the master of all the worlds, supreme over the Devas and who is Brahman. All the demi-gods, devas, asuras and every living being knows Him alone as the sustainer and sings his praise. He alone is worthy of Praise and none else.

Both the Vaishnavites and the Shivaites follow the recitation of the Sahasranam with adept devotion and love praising the Lord.

As per Hindu mythology the grand sire while he was on his death bed, after the 18 days battle at Kurukshetra as explained in the epic Mahabharata uttered the Sahasranama and handed over the same to Yudhistra which was taught to him by Sage Vyasa.

Sahasranama has a total of 108 Slokas, in Sanskrit brings out the versatility of the language its lucid flow and the rhythm with which it is uttered. Lord Vishnu is considered as the universal aggregate of all Hindu deities such as Shiva, Brahma, etc who emanate from Him alone.
In this cosmic aspect, Vishnu is also called Mahavishnu (Great Vishnu.).

The followers of the Advaitan philosophy in particular, Smartas believe that Vishnu and Shiva are the same and are hence different aspects of the one Supreme Being.

Vishnu is the all-inclusive deity, known as Purusha or Maha Purusha, Param Atma or Supreme Soul, Antaryami the in-dweller and He is the Totality in whom all souls are contained or get merged.

Recitation of the hymn Sahasranama an illustrious composition of Sage Vyasa brings calmness of mind, complete freedom from stress and eternal knowledge. Nothing evil or inauspicious will befall a man here or hereafter who daily hears or repeats these names devoted to Vasudeva, with a mind that is concentrated on Him, that man attains to great fame, leadership, wealth that is secure and the supreme good unsurpassed by anything. He will be free from all fears and be endowed with great courage and energy and he will be free from diseases. Beauty of form, strength of body and mind, and virtuous character will be natural to him.

Those persons that worship and adore the Lord of the universe, that deity who is inborn and possessed of blazing effulgence, who is the origin or cause of the universe, who knows no deterioration, and who is endued with eyes that are as large and beautiful as the petals of the lotus, - ‘Aravindalochana’ , will never meet with any discomforts in life.

Never will defeat attend on a man who adores the Lotus-Eyed One, who is the Master of all the worlds, who is birthless, and out of whom the worlds have originated and into whom they dissolve.

Here, is my humble attempt to bring the glory of the Lord narrated in the Vishnu Sahasranama where every word is a treasure and worthy of being glorified, referring the imminent attributes of the Lord Sri Vishnu.

Every word has a beautiful story behind it and which when read will be relished by all and cherished as divine memories.

JagadaAnanada kAraka

The Pancharatana Krits of Saint Tyagaraja the melodious forms of these compositions (Nata, Gaula, Arabhi, Varali, Sri) are the five Ghana ragas of Carnatic music also called the ghanapanchaka.
They are so called because they are suited to playing on the Veena.

Nata and Varali are the most ancient of the ragas dates back to 1000 years.
This is the only pancharatna kriti that was composed in Sanskrit.


    Among the Pancharatana krits "JagadhAnanada KAraka occupies an unique style of its own with the superb melody of being played in the "Nata" raga. It can be best rendered in the instrument Veena, indeed anyone will fall in LOVE with music after hearing this kriti.
